How to Convert a Bitmap From a Raster to a Vector File

Artists often need to apply their digital creations to a different medium or in a different size than they initially anticipated. Bitmap images and digital art created in programs like Paint Shop or Photoshop lose a lot of their quality when they are resized or reapplied. Vector images, however, do not have that problem. Adobe Illustrator offers an easy way to make vector files out of your bitmap images.

Things You'll Need

  • Computer
  • Adobe Illustrator CS2 or higher
  • Bitmap (Raster) images

Instructions

    • 1

Open Adobe Illustrator and open your bitmap image by selecting "File" then "Open" from the application menu at the top of your computer screen.

    • 2

Click on the "Selection Tool" in the Tool Options Panel at the left of the application window and click on the middle of your image.

    • 3

Click the "Live Trace" button in the Tool Options Panel above your canvas, below the application menu. Select "Photo High Fidelity" from the "Preset" drop-down in the Tool Options Panel.

    • 4

Click "Expand" in the Tool Options Panel. This creates vector paths along the outlines and for the fill colors of your bitmap image.

    • 5

Select "File" then "Save As" from the application menu and set the "Format" drop-down to either AI or EPS formats. These are the two primary vector file formats used by Illustrator. EPS files are more compatible with other vector programs.
