How to Make a Twin Duvet Cover

A duvet, also known as a down comforter, is wonderfully warm to sleep under, but if you want to protect it from dirt, damage and body oils, you need a duvet cover. A cover protects your duvet the same way a pillowcase protects your pillow, and many people choose to make their own. Twin-sized duvets, often used in children's rooms or guest rooms, can benefit greatly from a duvet cover. If you have sewing skills, they aren't difficult to make.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure your duvet. Do not trust the measurements your duvet came with, because there is very likely a few inches difference here and there.

    • 2

Add 1½ inches to the width and 3¾ inches to the length. This is the allowance you need for seams and hems. If your duvet cover is very fluffy, add a few more inches to cover it.

    • 3

Select your fabric. Your fabric should be soft and pleasant to sleep under, and for ease of sewing, it should have no stretch. Natural fabrics will breathe better, but synthetics are more stain-resistant. One thing many people do is choose different fabrics for the front and the back. If you choose different fabrics, make sure they are of a similar weight and stretch.

    • 4

Plan your cutting. Even for a twin bed, you will likely need to do some piecing with your fabric. In most cases, this simply means sewing long wide strips of fabric together. Decide how you are going to cut your fabric.

    • 5

Cut your fabric according to the measurements.

    • 6

Sew the pieces making up the front of your duvet cover together.

    • 7

Sew the pieces making up the back of your duvet cover together.

    • 8

Place your fabric together with the patterned sides facing toward each other.

    • 9

Sew around the sides and the bottom edge.

    • 10

Hem the top edge. Essentially, you are creating a large envelope that will allow you to slide your duvet in.

    • 11

Cut your ribbon into eight pieces of about 6 inches apiece.

    • 12

Sew the ends of the ribbons to the opening of your duvet cover. You want four ribbons sewn to the front and four ribbons sewn to the back; these ribbons should be lined up so that they can be tied together, linking the front and the back. Knot the loose ribbon ends to prevent fraying. Insert your duvet.

Tips & Warnings

  • Instead of ribbons, use buttons and ribbon loops.

  • Make your duvet cover reversible by choosing fabrics that will work for both display and comfort.
