Check that the washing machine is plugged into the electrical outlet if it won't run. Also check for a blown fuse at the circuit box in your home. Replace the fuse if necessary.

    • 2

See if the water inlet screens are blocked if the washer won't fill. The screens are usually located at the end of the supply hose. You might have to remove the back panel to reach them. Clean and replace them if necessary.

    • 3

Examine the timer on the front control panel to see if it is functioning by setting it. If it doesn't move, it isn't working. Call an appliance repairman to fix it.

    • 4

If the washer won't spin or agitate, see if clothes are unbalanced and have jammed in the drum. Jammed clothes can also cause the washing machine to rattle and move out of balance or "walk." If rearranging the clothes in the drum doesn't stop the washer from shuddering, make sure the machine is sitting level. Balance it with a level if necessary.

    • 5

Look at the drain hose if the washing machine won't drain. The drain hose should be coming from the back of the washer into a slop sink or floor drain. See if the drain hose is kinked, and straighten it out if it is.

Examine the hoses coming from the washer if the washing machine leaks. Look for cracked, leaking or worn-out hoses. Tighten the hose clamps with a wrench, or replace the hoses if necessary by following the instructions in your owner's manual.

Tips & Warnings

  • To prevent possible flood damage from leaking hoses that burst, install no-burst stainless steel mesh hoses with lever-type shutoff valves. These valves make it convenient to shut off the hot and cold water taps in between wash days, according to Dan Vandervort of HomeTips.com.

  • Always use the correct amount of detergent for your washer and your water hardness.

  • Don't put too many clothes in the washer at one time, or you may overload it.
