When working in a small office environment, it is important to be a "team player." One way to be a team player is to share job responsibilities within the office. If your coworker is behind on his daily tasks, you can jump in as a team member and help him out. By doing so, you are not only making yourself look good, but you are also helping to increase team productivity.

Determine what daily tasks are assigned to your coworker. If there is no list of tasks available, you can ask your coworker what his daily tasks are. Be sure to write the tasks down so you can reference them in the future.

Learn how to perform each of the daily tasks that are assigned to your coworker. If you are having difficulty learning how to handle the tasks, just ask your coworker. He may be able to advise you of an easier way to get the tasks done or help you learn the necessary skills.

Ask your coworker if she needs help completing her daily tasks once you have finished your own tasks. If she needs help, be sure that you fully understand the task you agree to undertake. If you are unsure of whether or not you can complete the entire task, let your coworker know.

Be responsible and accountable for the task you have agreed to help your coworker complete. This means that you must ensure that the assignment is completed thoroughly, professionally and efficiently. Don't start the task and leave it unfinished. Don't "half do" the tasks just because it's "not in your job description."

Don't allow your coworker to take advantage of you just because you are willing to help out. If he is not getting his daily tasks done because he is not managing his time wisely or if he is just being lazy, this is something that should be addressed by management. If you continue to secretly help him out, you are doing yourself, as well as the company, an injustice.
