How to Convert a Palm Desktop to Outlook Contacts and Calendar
Palm Desktop is the personal information manager for the Palm smartphone. Newer model phones come with Palm Desktop pre-installed, and the software is available as a free download for older model phones. A Palm Desktop can work with Outlook Contacts and Calendar; moreover, those who prefer the Outlook interface have the option to convert a Palm Desktop to an Outlook Contacts and Calendar format. The process requires synchronizing Palm with Outlook using HotSync, a free Palm download.

- Personal computer with Microsoft Outlook
- Palm smartphone (fully charged)
- Palm HotSync
- HotSync USB connection cable

Turn on the phone and make sure it has a full charge. Connect the phone to your personal computer using the special HotSync USB cable that came with your phone purchase. If this cable did not come with your phone, visit the Palm website to purchase one. (See Resources 2)

Install the HotSync software from the Palm Support website. (See Resources 1) Click the "Download" button and follow the onscreen instructions for installing the software onto your Palm phone. Near the end of the installation process, you will have the option to choose either the Palm Desktop interface or Microsoft Outlook. Click the "Radio" button for Microsoft Outlook and then press the "HotSync" button on the USB cable to complete the connection to your personal computer then continue with set-up.

Choose the HotSync settings on your personal computer by right-clicking the "HotSync Manager" icon in the taskbar at the bottom right of your computer screen then select "Settings." You will have the option to choose which Outlook applications you want to convert on your Palm Desktop. Select "Calendar" and "Contacts" and then click "Done."

Press the "HotSync" button on the USB cable to begin synchronizing. When the process is complete, the Outlook interface, along with Outlook Contact and Calendar information, will appear on your Palm phone.

Tips & Warnings
If your phone does not have a full charge, you can still complete the project by plugging in the power adapter.
Keep your phone in sync with information you store on your home computer by perfoming a HotSync on a regular basis.
You do not have the option to switch back and forth from Palm Desktop to Outlook. To switch back to the Palm Desktop interface, you will need to reinstall the HotSync application and choose the Palm Desktop interface.
