How to Fix Zone Errors When Playing Out-of-Area DVDs

When you insert a DVD that is out of the area, such as from another country or region, into the drive on your computer you may receive an a zone or region code error. This type of error means that your DVD drive is not using the correct region setting to play the disc. You can change the region for your drive to play out-of-area discs by accessing the Device Manager in the Windows operating system.

Instructions

  1. Windows XP

    • 1

      Click the "Start" menu and then right-click the option for "My Computer."

      Select "Properties" from the context menu.

      Click the "Device Manager" button.

      Click on the plus sign next to DVD/CD-ROM Drives to view the drive.

      Right-click on your DVD drive and select "Properties" from the context menu.

      Select the "DVD Region" tab.

      Select a country for the DVD that you want to play and click the "OK" button.

    Windows Vista

      Click the "Start" button and then type "Device Manager" into the "Start Search" box.

      Click on the plus sign that is next to the option for "DVD/CD-ROM Drives."

      Click on the plus sign next to "DVD/CD-ROM Drives" to view the drive.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can change the region for your DVD drive up to four times.

  • If the changes remaining is set to "0," your DVD player is locked and you will not be able to change the region.
