How to Convert a Cargo Van to a Hippie Van
Though the 70's have long passed, that doesn't mean that you can't ride in style in a hippie van. Even if you don't have a VW Bus, it is still possible to freak out the squares with your cargo van, but you're going to have to make a few simple changes first.

Paint the exterior. A psychedelic paint job on the outside of your cargo van is a crucial step to letting everyone know just how far out your ride really is. Though you can certainly take your van to an automotive paint specialist, the more authentic approach is to do it yourself. The best place to pick up automotive paint is at your local automotive supply store, where you can usually pick up the tools you will need to apply it as well. If you need some ideas for patterns on the van, visit an online stock photo database to check out the designs of those who have gone before you down this proud path. Try making stencils out of large sheets of draft paper to make the job easier. You can even download designs and take them to your local print shop, have them blown up as stencils, and then paint them on yourself.

Replace your hood ornament with a peace sign. Your van requires a symbol of unity and the spirit of love to replace the corporate logo welded into place in the front of your hippie vehicle. Although it is certainly possible to craft your new metal message yourself, unless you are an expert in welding, you should probably look to an expert to complete the work for you. Custom hood ornaments can be found online and are reasonably priced.

Cargo vans, as the name implies, are made to carry cargo. That's fine when you're hauling loads of boards and building materials, but the people coming along for the ride will probably want somewhere to sit. Though you could simply throw a bean bag or two into the back and call it a day, some states require that your passengers wear a seat belt. This, unfortunately, will require you to install seats, which will require you to consult with a van customization expert. To add your individualistic touch to the project, consult with your automotive installation specialist to see if he or she can build you bench seats, or retro seats, or something a little different. While you are adding some seats, you can also think about changing the material of the two seats that come standard with your cargo van. Beaded seat covers are an affordable and easy way to add flower power to your hippie-mobile instantly.

Set the scent for the scene by placing your hippie smell straight into your van. It isn't practical to burn incense inside of a moving vehicle, so instead use an earth friendly air freshener. Most of them cost around 50 cents, and they will keep the inside of your ride fresh and authentic at all times. For the truly eco-centric, you can even make your own.

Cover the back end of your ride in some bumper stickers. You need to voice your opinion about the subjects that matter most to you, and a bumper sticker is the proper way to go about doing this. If you don't want to shell out the money to purchase them, most charity organizations and nonprofits are glad to have the free press and will give you bumper stickers at no cost to you. Just contact the groups you love and see if you can work out a deal.
