How to Reuse Webbing From Lawn Chairs
Lawn chair webbing consists of strips of durable cloth. It's used to weave in and out over a lawn chair frame to provide support for the sitter. Lawn chair frames generally don't last as long as the webbing, but you can reuse lawn chair webbing in a variety of ways because it is usually strong, durable, bright and colorful. Use lawn chair webbing to make a wallet, belt or placemat.
Instructions
-
Make a Wallet
-
1
Cut two pieces of webbing. One should be 9 inches long, and the other should be 7.5 inches long.
-
2
Fold each end of the 9-inch piece up and press the fold with an iron that is just slightly warm. Make sure the iron isn't hot because it can melt webbing that is made of synthetic materials.
-
-
3
Take the 7.5-inch piece of webbing and make a fold along one of the long edges. Again, use the slightly warm iron to help keep the fold in place.
-
4
The 7.5-inch piece of webbing is the inside pocket of the wallet. Sew or hot-glue the long bottom folded edge of the shorter piece to the longer piece. Make sure your edges line up neatly and center the 7.5-inch piece over the 9" piece.
-
5
Fold the sides of the 9-inch piece over the 7.5-inch piece and sew or glue the sides firmly together.
-
6
Fold the wallet in half and gently press the final fold with the slightly warm iron.
Make a Belt
-
7
Cut a length of webbing 8 inches longer than your waist measurement.
-
8
Loop one end of the webbing through both D-rings, which will form the belt buckle. A D-ring is a metal ring shaped like the letter D. Sew the end of the webbing back about an inch from the D-ring to hold it in place.
-
9
To keep the end of the belt from fraying, you can either hem it or burn the edge of the webbing with a hot iron.
Make Placemats
-
10
Weave the lawn chair webbing to make a 12-inch by 18-inch mat.
-
11
Cut a 15-inch by 21-inch piece of canvas, and make a 1-inch hem all the way around the canvas. Place the canvas over the woven mat.
-
12
Center the weaving on the canvas, and use straight pins to hold the woven mat and the canvas together.
-
13
Use a sewing machine to sew the woven rectangle to the canvas placemat.
-
14
For extra durability, you can sew all the internal edges of the webbing to the canvas.
