How to Know If You Need a New Computer Keyboard
Although one of the most reliable parts of a computer, keyboards can sometimes wear out with heavy use. In other cases, liquid or other damage can cause a key to stick or not work. Replacing the keyboard on a desktop computer is as simple as plugging in a new keyboard. However, replacing the keyboard on a laptop can involve removing many screws and may require disassembling the computer.

Look at your keyboard. After extensive use, some keyboards may literally have the letters worn off. However, if your keys are still working, you might consider buying keyboard stickers to extend the life of your keyboard before replacement. In many cases, if you have worn the letters off your keyboard, the keyboard is likely nearing the end of its useful lifespan anyway.

Make a note of times when a letter doesn't register when typing normally. In some cases, this is an indication of a keyboard that needs to be replaced. However, in some cases, you can temporarily fix the problem by pressing down hard on the key with the computer off. In some cases, the tabs that hold the key in place are worn and the key may not depress properly. Pressing down hard on the key re-seats the key. This is another sign of a keyboard nearing or at the end of its useful life.

With some older operating systems, "keybounce" may also be an indication of a worn keyboard that needs replacement. Keybounce is when you press a letter once, but have the letter appear on your screen several times. Most modern operating systems sense keybounce and defeat the problem by not allowing multiple instances of the same letter in quick succession. However, if you are experiencing keybounce issues, it may indicate a worn-out keyboard.

Tips & Warnings
Key cap stickers can extend the life of a keyboard whose only problem is worn off lettering, especially on laptops where replacement keyboards can be more expensive.
