Brochure Creation in Open Office

The easiest way to create a brochure in Open Office is to download a template from the Open Office site. Go to http://templates.services.openoffice.org/en/search/node/brochure and choose a template from the site. The templates are, unfortunately, limited to a basic tri-fold brochure and a double-sided pamphlet. Download these brochure templates to your hard drive. You may search the Internet for other templates. I found a basic template at WordAutomation.com.

Open the brochure in Writer. You will see that there is placement text in the brochure. Leave this text in place for a guideline. In the brochure template, on the first page, there is Editing The Cover, The Back Cover, and Tri-fold Brochure (the front cover). On the second page, there is a tutorial on Printing Your Brochure, Creating Bullets and Creating Numbers. The last blurb is Let Your Story Unfold. This is where you will fill in your text and graphics.

Creating a colorful brochure is important to the success of your message. In Writer, click on Format/Page/Background. Here you are presented with two choices, either Color or Graphic. For this exercise, I have created a graphic in GIMP, an open-source graphic editing program. I click on Graphic, find my file and click on the OK button. Another style option is to add a border, Format/Page/Border. The borders come in a variety of widths and allow shading. Remember to repeat the steps on the second page for continuity in style.

Now it is time to add text. This is simple. You add text in the brochure areas just as if you were typing a letter.

Adding graphics is easy. Click on Insert/Picture/From File. You can add borders, flip the picture, and do limited special effects with the Filter in the Picture toolbar that should pop up when you click on the graphic. Notice the green boxes around the graphic. This indicates that you may manipulate the graphic by resizing, retouching, and placement by moving the graphic. When you are finished with all the text and graphic placements, you are ready to print the brochure.
