How to Educate Your Teen About the Dangers of Unprotected Sex
As teens start maturing and hormones run rampant, sex becomes part of the thought process. Teens naturally wonder what it's like, how it feels, and may think it will make them more mature. Without proper sexual education, teens can be in for a tough lesson. Along with unplanned pregnancy, STDs, or sexually transmitted diseases, are more common in today's society. Sexual relations between teens lead to a majority of these cases.

Talk with your teen openly. Once you have established the trust necessary, then she will be more inclined to come to you with questions or advice. Never pry, which could undo the trust and push your teen away.

Listen to your teen. Listening lets him know that you are there and will support his decision, no matter what. A teenager needs a healthy support system to help overcome fears and validate who he is. Demanding that your teen abstain from sex can make him want it that much more.

Offer to help choose a contraceptive method with your teen. If your teen has or is going to become sexually active, there is little you can do. She will find a way even if forbidden, so help her to take responsibility. Condoms will assist with prevention of both STDs and pregnancy, although no method is 100% effective.

Explain options that your teen has in regard to sex. Petting, kissing and even masturbation are all alternatives that may prolong your teen's virginity until he is more mature. These activities are a normal part of the maturing process and should not be discouraged as an alternative to sexual intercourse.

Find a local group that can help you show your teen the hardships of teen parenting. Groups can give your teen firsthand experience, allowing her to care for a "baby." The baby is a doll with a microchip sensor. Every time the baby cries, the teen must get up and turn a key to stop the cries. Some dolls require cuddling, feeding and diaper changing before the key turn will eliminate the cries.
