Instructions

  1. Removing the Old Light Fixture

    • 1

Remove the metal nut that holds your glass or plastic light cover on. Place the cover to the side. Use pliers if necessary. Remove the bulb, being careful not to get burned. Locate the two mounting screws and loosen them counterclockwise with your screwdriver.

    • 2

Pull down the mounting base portion of your light fixture. If it has paint holding it in place, slide your putty knife around it to loosen it up. You will not be able to fully remove it from the ceiling, because the wires are still connected. Leave it hanging in place.

    • 3

Turn off the breaker that provides power to this room. Turn off the switch that controls the light fixture you are working on. Hold your electrical tester to your light fixture wires to make sure the power is really off. Remove each wire nut, noting how each wire is connected. You will want to match these connections when you hook up the new light fixture.

    Installing the New Light Fixture

    • 4

Separate all pieces within the box. Lift your new light fixture with the mounting base up to the ceiling.

    • 5

Reconnect the wires, matching up each wire just like with the old light fixture. Install new wire nuts to make sure the connections will be secure.

    • 6

Install the two mounting screws inside the ceiling light fixture box. Just get them started in the screw holes. Leave your light fixture mounting base hanging in place while you do this.

    • 7

Lift the light fixture mounting base to the ceiling, lining up the screw holes. The screws that you just started in the ceiling box will go down through the light fixture mounting base. Slightly twist the base to the right. Secure the base to the ceiling using your screwdriver.

    • 8

Install new light bulbs. Don't overtighten. Install your new light fixture cover and secure it with the mounting nut. Turn on your power and make sure your new ceiling mount light fixture works.

Tips & Warnings

  • Don't exceed maximum bulb wattage ratings. Doing so can cause a fire.
