How to Write a Job Self-Assessment Report

Your employer may ask you for a job self-assessment report in conjunction with an annual performance review. These reports are a way for you to track your job performance for the year, noting any accomplishments and struggles. Writing a self-assessment report may sound stressful, but it doesn't need to be.

      Read carefully the instructions on the self-assessment form. Your supervisor may give you a questionnaire that asks for a brief self-assessment at the end, or you may have a long-form essay. In order to present an accurate report, you need to understand what's being asked.

      Outline your major accomplishments of the past year on pen and paper or on the computer. Also note struggles, failures and challenges you feel were not met properly. You'll want to be honest about your faults as well as successes.

      Review your job description, which you should be able to get from your boss or someone in human resources. Note additional tasks you may have been asked to perform or areas of your job description that don't seem relevant. If no job description exists for your position, create a list of responsibilities and duties.

      List any training you received during the year. Was training made available that you declined to pursue? Do you wish specific training had been offered? Did you seek training outside of work through classes or books? What feedback can you provide about the job-skills training at your workplace?

      Ask one to two coworkers for feedback on your job performance. Remind them of any projects you've worked on together, and let them know that you're working on a self-assessment report.

      Draft a self-assessment report that answers the questions in the prompt or worksheet. Be thorough in your responses to questions, working in as much detail as you can. The report may ask you to describe projects you've managed, sales goals you've met or clients you've worked with. It may also ask about workload, hours, how you fit in with the company and you short-term and long-term goals. Address your thoughts on training and job description so your employer can make future changes if need be. Don't write what you think your supervisor wants to hear. Just answer the questions honestly.

      Reread and revise the draft over several days. Be honest about your accomplishments and failures; your boss will likely use your report as a discussion prompt during your performance review.
