How to Sharpen a Straight Razor With a Lansky
The Lansky Sharpening System is a product designed to sharpen any type of knife blade. It contains several honing stones, honing oil and a knife guide to create a sharp edge along the knife blade. The Lanksy system can be used for kitchen knives and hunting knives, as well as razor blades for straight razors. The key to sharpening a straight razor with the Lansky system is selecting the correct honing stone and striking the blade at the proper angle. Does this Spark an idea?

Lay the Lanksy knife clamp on a flat surface and use a flat head screwdriver or coin to loosen the top screw to open the clamp.

Insert the straight razor blade horizontally into the knife clamp until only half of the blade is sticking out. The sharp edge of the razor should be facing toward you.

Tighten the screw in the knife clamp by turning it clockwise with the screwdriver or coin.

Insert the guide rod, provided with the Lansky system, into the hole located in the end of the course honing stone. Use your fingers to turn the rod screw clockwise, securing it firmly to the honing stone.

Apply two drops of honing oil to the surface of the honing stone that will come into contact with the razor.

Insert the guide rod into the hole in the blade clamp labeled 17 degrees.

Hold the honing stone in your dominant hand and the hold the knife clamp in the other hand.

Push the honing stone against the razor and toward the other hand. Stop pushing when you reach the end of the honing stone.

Lift the stone off the razor and return it to the starting position. Move it slightly to the right and push the stone against the razor again. The pattern for sharpening the razor is a "W" shape.

Remove the razor from the clamp by loosening the screw. Turn the razor over and reinsert it into the clamp. Repeat the sharpening procedure on the new side of the razor.

Remove the course honing stone and insert the medium honing stone. Sharpen both sides of the razor with the medium stone.

Remove the medium honing stone and insert the fine honing stone. Sharpen both sides of the razor with the fine stone.

Remove the razor from the knife clamp.

Tips & Warnings
If the stone begins to move too smoothly across the razor, wipe the stone with a cloth to remove the metal fragments from the stone.
Always lift the honing stone away from the razor at the end of each push.
