How to Make an LCD TV Computer Monitor

The price of both flat screen computer monitors and flat screen televisions have fallen sharply in recent years. Monitors and televisions that once cost thousands of dollars can now be purchased for just a few hundred. Even so, there is still a significant price disparity between the cost of a flat screen monitor and the price of an LCD television of similar size and quality. With the prices of flat screen computer monitors generally less than the price of a good LCD TV, many computer users are looking for ways to turn their boxes into top quality TVs.

Instructions

    • 1

Find a good spot to put the LCD TV you create using your computer. If you have an entertainment center you can put the monitor in the spot where the TV would go, while hiding the computer itself inside the cabinet.

    • 2

Set your PC and monitor in place, making sure you leave room to work behind the TV cabinet or entertainment center. Place the flat screen monitor in the spot for the TV, then run the monitor cable and the power cord to the interior of the cabinet.

    • 3

Place your computer inside the entertainment center or TV cabinet, connect the monitor cables and power cords and plug it in. Attach a wired or wireless keyboard and mouse and turn the computer on.

    • 4

Log on to the computer and insert your TV tuner card into a free USB port. Install the software that came with the TV tuner card and allow it to find all of the channels in your area. Set up your remote control and the DVR function if it is included with the tuner card.

    • 5

Use the remote control that came with the TV tuner card to change channels, record programs to your hard drive using the DVR function, and play back those shows later.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use an old computer, or purchase a cheap new one, to serve as your TV. That will allow you to dedicate the device to serving as an LCD TV without disrupting your computing needs.
