How To Get Free Fonts and Add Them to a Word Document

Search for "free fonts" in a search engine and you will find several sites that offer free fonts. Sites like www.1001freefonts.com and www.urbanfonts.com are good options. Fonts are saved in different formats, so make sure the fonts you want will work with Word. TrueType (TTF, .ttf), OpenType (OTF, .otf), and Type 1 (PFM, .pfm) all work with Word.

Download the fonts you want. Click on the download link and follow the instructions, or right click and choose "Save File As" from the menu. Make a note of the folder where you download the font.

Add the font to the list of ones used by your operating system. In Windows XP go to the Start menu and go to Control Panel.

Click on "Appearance and Themes." On the left side of the window there should be a little box titled "See Also." Click on "Fonts" inside that box.

On the menu bar go to "File." Click on "Install New Font." In the lower left of the window there should be a directory tree (list of directories in your computer). Select the directory where you downloaded the font.

Select the fonts you want to install and make sure the "Copy fonts To Font Folder" checkbox is checked. Click "OK." The fonts should now be available in Word.
