Buy durable cushions with reinforced zippers, seams and piping. Look for waterproof materials coated with Teflon and a UV-resistant material. The protective coatings will prevent moisture and mildew as well as fading from the sun.

Bring your cushions indoors or place them under a protected area when heavy rain is predicted as, even though most outdoor cushion materials are water-resistant, they still need to be kept from a total soaking to prevent mold and mildew. Place them on their sides in the sun, allowing them to dry before putting them back on the chair, if they do become soaked by rain.

Clean any spills with water and a mild soap or a commercial spot cleaner. Understand that mildew can grow on these spots if not cleaned, even if the fabric is mildew-resistant. Clean any suntan oil and sunscreen from the cushion immediately to prevent staining.

Store the cushions indoors in a dry area for the winter in harsh climates. Make sure they are dry before bringing them inside. Place them in a trash bag for protection.
