How to Stop Hair Loss With Swedish Bitters

Swedish bitters, an herbal tonic based on a 500-year-old European recipe, is widely hailed for its health benefits if not for its strong taste. Most of its benefits are digestive, but it can be used topically for some skin disorders, including hemorrhoids, acne and eczema. There is nothing in the Old Manuscript (the original recipe) or today's literature to indicate that Swedish bitters can prevent, control or reverse hair loss, but there is also nothing to suggest that you can't give it a try.

Instructions

    • 1

You can purchase Swedish bitters as a tincture in any health food store or from online purveyors. Follow the manufacturer's directions. Dosages and methods of use vary depending on the purpose. You can drink a shot before or after dinner to improve digestion, but for medicinal purposes, most dosages are intended to be diluted in tea or water.

    • 2

You can also purchase the raw herbs premixed or separately to make your own Swedish bitters. If you buy the herbs individually, you must follow the recipe exactly.

    • 3

Blend the following herbs, and place them in a wide-necked 2-L bottle with a tight lid: 10 g of aloe, 5 g of myrrh, 0.2 g of saffron, 10 g of senna leaves, 10 g of camphor, 10 g of angelica roots, 10 g of zedvoary roots, 10 g of manna, 10 g of theriac venezian, 5 g of carline thistle root, and 10 g of rhubarb root.

    • 4

Pour rye or spirit over the herbs. Cover, shake and place on a warm, sunny windowsill or beside a heat source for 2 weeks, shaking daily. Strain and pour into small dark bottles with good stoppers.

    • 5

Use old towels to protect your clothes and, if doing this at bedtime, your bedding as Swedish bitters stains. Purveyors of Swedish bitters also recommend covering any bandages wet with Swedish bitters with plastic to contain any drips, so you can cover your scalp, too. Massage just enough Swedish bitters into your scalp to cover all the skin. Don't saturate whatever hair you have with it. Let it sit for 2 to 4 hours, then wash it out and style as usual.

Tips & Warnings

  • Since Swedish Bitters is not specifically recommended for hair loss, the method of application is adapted from the procedure for treatment of skin disorders with this tonic.
