Instructions

    • 1

Take the color of felt that you will use for the base of the hat. Cut a length that is about 21 to 23 inches long (average diameter of a person's head--adjust to specific hat recipient) with five triangular spikes. (It will look like a crown.) Make the spikes about 5 inches tall and there should about 3 inches on the sides.

    • 2

Pin the back two edges together. Pin each of the triangles with the one next to it to form a cone-shaped hat.

    • 3

Find the one seam that runs all the way down to the bottom--this is the backside of the hat. Position the hat so the back seam is facing you. Sew this back seam and the front two seams. Leave the other two seams on the side open for now.

    • 4

Cut out four triangles of the same color felt for the ears. Cut out two smaller triangles from the other color for the insides of the ears.

    • 5

Sew each colored triangle onto one of the base-color triangles. Sew the other base-colored triangle on top. Do this for both ears.

    • 6

Turn the ears right side out and pin each ear to an open side of the hat (still inside out). Make sure that the colored part of the ear is facing the front of the hat and that the tip of the ear is facing down.

    • 7

Sew the ears onto the hat. Turn the hat right side out

    • 8

Fold the point on the hat in. Turn the hat inside out and pinch the extra fabric, pinning it in place.

    • 9

Sew down the excess fabric created by the (now inverted) point. Cut off any extra fabric so there is no bump visible.

    • 10

Create the brim with two 12-by-3 inch folded rectangular pieces of felt. Pin them around the bottom of the hat and sew them on. Trim any excess fabric and turn the hat right side out.

    • 11

Try on the hat for size and adjust for any changes.

Tips & Warnings

  • Alternatively, you could take a hat you already own and sew ears onto it.

  • Decorate your cat ear hat with glitter, gems, eyes or whiskers.
