How to Determine Golf Club Swing Speed

Knowing the speed of your golf swing is an important factor if you are looking to improve your game. Your swing speed can help you determine the best clubs to fit your game and even which balls to use. Due to advances in equipment, you can optimize your game by selecting clubs and balls that are designed to perform best with slower, medium or high swing speeds.

Instructions

    • 1

Hit a number of balls with your driver at a golf range. Make a list of the distance that you carry each drive. Pay special attention to the drives that "feel" good. Many things can affect distance so it is best to use the best drives to figure your swing speed.

    • 2

Add together the top-ten drive distances and divide by ten to reach an average distance. If you are measuring distance to include the roll you get, subtract five percent from the average.

    • 3

Take the average carry distance and divide by 1.75. This will give you an estimated ball speed. If you average carry distance is 200 yards, your ball speed will be 114 miles per hour.

    • 4

Divide your ball speed by 1.5. 1.5 is what's known as the smash factor. This will result in your swing speed. Using the above example, the swing speed would be 76 miles per hour.

Tips & Warnings

  • For more accurate swing speed determinations you can purchase a swing speed meter or visit a golf retailer that has a swing speed analyzer.

  • Distance can be affected by the way you swing, the loft of the club, the spin on the ball and other factors. This calculation is only an estimate.
