How to Decorate a Baby Shower Cake With Toys

Custom designed cakes for special occasions can be beautiful but expensive depending on the cake's size and intricacy. A simple, plain cake can be transformed into a unique and thoughtful creation by using rattles or other small baby toys as cake toppers. Shower cakes can also be personalized by choosing small toys that are relative to the baby shower or nursery theme.

Instructions

Purchase or make a cake. Choose a cake that is a favorite of the guest of honor and cover with a neutral-colored icing, such as white. Trim the outside with blue or pink to acknowledge the sex of the baby, or a gender-neutral color. Add a personalized message to the mom-to-be on the top. Keep in mind, sheet cakes (rectangular-shaped cakes) will provide the most room for messages and will accommodate more or larger toys.

Choose the baby toys. Look for lightweight items that are either made of plastic, which can be wiped clean, or machine washable if made of cloth. Baby rattles, teething ring key chains and rubber duckies are excellent choices and can be used by the baby after he or she is born.

Consider the shower theme or nursery theme. If the baby shower is sports themed, look for rattles or baby toys specific to the theme. If the nursery is decorated in a dinosaur or race car theme, find small, plastic dinosaurs or matchbox cars to place on the cake. Also, customize the verbiage on the cake to relate to the particular theme.

Add the toys to the cake upon arrival at the shower destination. Toys that are added prior to transporting may be more likely to tilt, slide or sink into the cake. Remove the cake from the box and place on the designated cake table. Carefully place the toys on the cake making sure they are stable, but do not press them into the icing. Toys should rest gently on the cake with as little disruption to the icing as possible.

Tips & Warnings

  • Toys should be thoroughly cleaned and inspected before use by a baby.

  • Items such as plastic dinosaurs or small cars may pose a chocking hazard to an infant. Be sure all toys are age appropriate before giving them to a child.
