How to Create a Cookbook Layout

Although every recipe is different, most recipes follow a basic format that includes the name of the recipe, the yield, some basic information about the recipe--also known as "chat"--the ingredients list and the method. Designing a cookbook layout involves creating a basic template that includes each of these elements and is easy to read. Your cookbook layout may also include tips and sidebars as well as pictures. These should follow a consistent format in order to produce an attractive cookbook that is easy to use. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Create a format for your recipes. Start with the title at the top of the page, and then put the yield, or the number of servings the recipe will produce, either next to it or underneath it. Include a space for text explaining how the recipe will look, taste, or smell, or providing an anecdote about the dish. List the ingredients underneath this text and then present your method or cooking instructions. If you will be including tips or sidebars, allow room within your layout for this information.

Shade sections such as tips, ingredients, or instructions in order to set them apart from the rest of the recipe. Use a color that is attractive but doesn't interfere with the readability of the text.

    • 3

Situate pictures on the same page or the page opposite the recipe. If you are using line drawings depicting cooking techniques, intersperse them with the instructions that correspond to them.

    • 4

Lay out your introductory material with an eye towards integrating it visually with your recipe design. Use the same font, or include some of the same graphic design features.
