How to Grow Orchids in Glass Aquariums

Orchids can be successfully grown in glass aquariums, but care should be taken to choose orchids that are tolerant of the conditions you can provide in the enclosure. Air movement, temperature and light are all important aspects of the surroundings that can be controlled to provide the best growing environment for your particular species. Make sure the orchids you choose tolerate high humidity because moisture can build up quickly. The cover for the aquarium should include an area that can be opened at varying levels to help maintain the right humidity and temperature for your orchids. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Put the water filters and pump in place per the manufacturer's instructions. Under-gravel filters designed for aquariums work well to keep the water from stagnating.

    • 2

Add the gravel to the desired depth. Four inches is an acceptable amount, but you should vary this depending on the size of the aquarium and the maximum possible height of the orchids.

    • 3

Place the planting medium on top of the gravel. You can also leave the orchids in pots, and place the pots in the gravel, surrounded by sphagnum moss and other plants if desired.

    • 4

Place the orchids in the planting medium.

    • 5

Attach the fan to the top of the aquarium. This is essential for adequate air circulation and ventilation.

    • 6

Install the appropriate light for your particular variety of orchid.

    • 7

Add water as required to maintain appropriate humidity levels for the species of orchids you are growing in the aquarium.

    • 8

Monitor the temperature and humidity daily to maintain the best environment for your orchids.

    • 9

Change the amount of ventilation as needed to maintain the optimum humidity and temperature levels.
