How to Secure a Vinyl Runner to Carpeted Stairs Without Nails
At times it may be necessary to protect or cover the treads of carpeted steps, whether for sanitation purposes or to cover unsightly stains or colors in the carpet. Use vinyl-friendly self-adhesive Velcro instead of nails or staples to adhere objects to the carpet for a secure, smooth fit. Velcro, which comes in rolls, is available in a variety of widths and clinging strengths. Does this Spark an idea?
Instructions

1
Measure the width of the runner to be placed on the stairs.
-
2
Unroll the Velcro to the determined width and cut it with scissors. Repeat this process until you have enough Velcro strips to complete the task.
-
-
3
Place the vinyl runner on the first step, the way it would look when installed, to determine where the first strip of Velcro will be adhered. Remove the Velcro's backing to expose the adhesive, and secure the strip to the runner.
-
4
Press the vinyl runner with the Velcro to the carpet to secure it into place.
-
5
Repeat this process up the entire stairway. Depending on the width of the Velcro and the stair tread, more than one strip may be needed for each step; one strip each at the front and the back of the tread will suffice in most cases.
