How to Install a Hammock Furnace Filter

Your furnace stirs up a lot of dust. That's one of its drawbacks. And that's why a filter is so important. Energy Star recommends inspecting your furnace filter every month, particularly in the hottest and coldest months. Beyond these inspections, however, remember to replace the filter at least every three months. These measures will not only cut down on loose dust in the air; they will help tame your energy bills and help maintain the condition of your furnace. Installing hammock filters presents no unusual challenges for the do-it-yourselfer. These filters simply wrap around the bottom of the air blower. Does this Spark an idea?

      Turn off your furnace.

      Locate the access door on your furnace unit. Location varies by unit, but most times you will find this on your system's return-air side, according to "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Simple Home Repair."

      Open the access door. With some units you lift the door off two hooks; other units require a screwdriver to remove screws. Yet other units simply require you only to pull the door open toward you with your hands. Opening the door will reveal the disposable hammock filter at the base of the blower.

      Tug the the filter out with your hands. Use care so that you don't dump out any dust or debris. Dispose of the old filter by tossing it into the garbage.

      Install the new hammock filter by pushing it in place of the old one.

      Close the access door, and power up your furnace.
