How to Stop Zoysia From Creeping Over Sidewalks
Zoysia are hardy warm-weather grasses that are often used in lawns. A lawn with Zoysia grass is green and lush when it's not dormant during the cooler months. Zoysia grasses are aggressive and will spread quickly over a sidewalk once they are established in a lawn. Compounding the problem is the fact Zoysia grasses spread sideways--as opposed to up. Stop Zoysia grass from spreading by installing a barrier along the sidewalk. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Select an edging to stop Zoysia grass from spreading over the sidewalk. Among the options are barriers made of plastic or metal. Other edging materials such as wood are also available, but it's better to use something that won't rot (or deteriorate) underground. Make sure edging is at least 8 inches high.
-
2
Dig 6 inches into the ground along the border of the sidewalk with a shovel or spade. Dig wide enough to install edging.
-
-
3
Place edging along the sidewalk. Edging should be 6 inches under the ground and 2 inches above it.
-
4
Trim any Zoysia grass that comes into contact with the edging on a regular basis.
-
5
Sweep or rake up any Zoysia grass clippings to keep the grass from spreading to unwanted areas.

Tips & Warnings
You can also initially remove Zoysia grass from the area next to the sidewalk with a herbicide. This helps prepare the area to install the edging, but won't do anything to prevent the Zoysia grass from coming back.
