How to Remove Mucus From Inside the Throat Area

Although mucus production is a natural defense against inflammation of the mucus membranes, when it becomes excessive or discolored it can cause discomfort, post-nasal drip, a sore throat, coughing or bad breath. Clearing mucus from your throat may become necessary. Constant clearing of the throat and expectorating is not always an option and can cause your throat to become more irritated, but there are steps you can take to remove mucus from your throat.

Things You'll Need

  • Water
  • Decongestant
  • Salt
  • Chili powder
  • Tea
  • Honey
  • Humidifier

Take a decongestant. This will help your body dislodge any built-up mucus and cause vasoconstriction in the nose, throat and sinuses to reduce its production.

Drink large amounts of water to keep your body hydrated and help clear out your throat.

Gargle with warm water and salt or chili powder. Gargling breaks up and clears mucus in the throat and helps reduce the effects of a sore throat.

Drink hot tea with honey or lemon. Tea soothes the throat and contributes to hydration and breaking up mucus.

Install a humidifier to increase the humidity of a room. Dry air can increase congestion, and adding moisture to the air will help reduce the amount of mucus in your throat.
