How to Make a Table Top Tiki Hut Cheap

Save

A popular summer party theme for adults and children alike are tiki statues and huts. Tropical embellishments such as coconut shell cups and straws and brightly colored flowers complete the festive look. Creating a tabletop tiki hut for table decorations is an easy project that adults and kids can get involved in making. A tabletop tiki hut is a way to recycle products found around the house, generating savings on party expenses.

Things You'll Need

  • Newspaper
  • Transparent tape
  • Scissors
  • Ruler
  • Pencil
  • Brown spray paint
  • Black acrylic paint
  • Paint brush
  • Brightly colored artificial tropical flowers
  • Glue
  • Roll a tube, using several folded sheets of newspaper, measuring 10 inches tall by 9 inches wide.

  • Tape the newspaper tube together using transparent tape. Set the tube on a flat surface. Trim so the bottom of the tube sits evenly.

  • Form a cone, using several sheets of newspaper, by rolling it similar to the tube. Hold one end of the tube tight, allowing the other end of the tube to flare. Make sure the bottom of the cone is very wide and the end being held is very narrow. Tape the cone in place.

  • Measure 7 inches, with the ruler, down from the tighter end of the newspaper cone. Cut off the excess newspaper with the scissors.

  • Measure 4 inches down from the tighter end of the cone. Draw a line around the cone with the pencil.

  • Cut 3-inch-long strips, ½-inch apart, from the cone's bottom, or widest part, up to the pencil line. Make sure the bottom of the cone has an evenly cut "shredded" look, like the grass roof of a hut.

  • Place the newspaper tube and the shredded cone on more newspaper in a well-ventilated garage or outside area. Spray paint in brown. Allow to dry.

  • Place the hut roof on top of the tube. Turn this upside down. Tape together the hut and the roof inside using transparent tape.

  • Paint an elongated capital "D" in black acrylic paint on the front center bottom edge of the tiki hut to create a "door." Allow to dry.

  • Scatter and attach, using glue or transparent tape, brightly colored artificial tropical flowers around the tabletop tiki hut to finish the centerpiece.

Tips & Warnings

  • Tiki huts can be made in different colors for a variety, if using more than one tabletop hut or on several tables.
  • Always use spray paint in a well-ventilated area. Supervise children using spray paint products.
