The saliva our body produces is either acidic, alkali or neutral in its pH balance. If your saliva is too acidic, you can experience problems such as tooth decay, dry mouth and bad breath. It is possible to bring the pH balance in your mouth to a normal level and you can do it naturally.

Test your pH balance. To determine how acidic your saliva is, test your mouth's pH balance with a pH strip, sold over the counter at drug stores. The strip will indicate your saliva's acidity level on a numerical scale. If your pH level is below 7.0, your saliva is considered acidic.

Change your diet. The foods you eat play a large part in saliva acidity. Meats, eggs, fish and some dairy products are highly acidic and can affect your pH balance. Reduce the amount of these foods and increase your intake of alkaline food such as berries, fruits and vegetables. Almonds are also alkaline and eating a few of these per day can reduce your acid levels if they are not seriously high.

Supplement with natural minerals. Minerals such as calcium and magnesium play an important role in maintaining a healthy pH level. You should discuss your concerns with your doctor and find out how much of these minerals you may need.

Increase your intake of foods and juices containing potassium. Potassium is another vital component in maintaining a healthy pH balance. Tomatoes, potatoes and bananas are all rich in potassium.

Avoid foods and drinks loaded with sugar. If your saliva is acidic, consuming excess amounts of sugar will further irritate the condition. Also replace soft drinks and coffee with water.
