How to Add Curb Appeal to a Ranch Style House

Due to the shape and size of most ranch style homes, and the tendency to build many ranch style homes in one neighborhood, it is common for homes of this style to appear very homogenous. If you are selling your home, or just want to set it apart from others in the neighborhood, you can easily create some curb appeal by making just a few changes.

Things You'll Need

  • Paint
  • Trim
  • Shutters
  • Flower boxes
  • Door hardware
  • Wreath
  • Welcome mat
  • Bricks or pavers
  • Cedar bark
  • Mailbox
  • Attend to any maintenance issues. Fix rain gutters or downspouts that may be loose and hanging, repaint areas that are peeling or cracked and make sure that front door hardware is in working condition.

  • Remove debris or garbage from the front yard. Cars that are not in working order should be towed or placed in the garage.

  • Give your home a fresh coat of paint. For best results, try a small sample of color before painting the entire house.

  • Choose a contrasting paint color that will accentuate architectural details.

  • Add trim around windows and along the roofline and corners of the home. Add shutters to the windows. Paint these in the contrasting color that you have chosen.

  • Paint your front door and add updated hardware.

  • Place a wreath or welcome sign on your front door.

  • Place a welcome mat on the front porch. Add some brightly colored flowers in pots to your steps and porch.

  • Create a walkway to the front porch. A soft, curved design can create a more interesting look. Use bricks, pavers or stamped concrete to make your walkway.

  • Give the front of your home some depth by adding window boxes filled with colorful plants. The boxes can be painted the same contrasting color as the shutters or trim.

  • Add or extend a front porch. This solution may be slightly more expensive than others, but it will make a greater impact. Add an interesting porch railing for even more style. Acquire any needed building permits first.

  • Landscape your front yard to best accentuate your ranch style home. Plant flower beds that curve gracefully from the curb to the house. Add softer, more circular lines that will minimize the house's boxy shape.

  • Scatter cedar bark in your flower beds. When damp, these will make your yard smell fresh and clean.

  • Purchase and install a new mailbox. Paint it to match the house, or choose a stylish design that suits your taste.
