How to Change Ntuser.dat to Ntuser.man

Roaming and mandatory profiles are used to store all user settings for a computer. Settings include desktop icons and wallpaper, installed programs under specific user accounts, and user access to certain programs. Many public computers use mandatory profiles to prevent multiple users from changing any settings on the computer. A roaming profile allows the same user to access their profile on multiple computers. By manually changing ntuser.dat to ntuser.man, you can ensure a user account accesses the same exact profile repeatedly, or prevent public computer settings from being changed.

Instructions

    • 1

Log in to the computer running Active Directory Users and Computers to create the ntuser.dat file.

    • 2

Create a shared directory or folder to store the profiles. This can be located anywhere on the desired computer.
To create a folder, right-click any empty area in the directory you want the folder stored and select "New Folder." Type a name for the folder.
To share the folder, right-click the folder and press "Sharing" or "Sharing and Security." This will depend on which version of Windows you're running. Check "Share this folder on the network" and type a share name. This can be any name you wish.

    • 3

Open Active Directory Users and Computers. Navigate to the user name you wish to create a profile for. Right-click the name and select "Properties." Under "Profile", type the shared folder path name under "Profile Path." Type the path in the following format: "\\servername\sharedfoldername\username." Click "Apply" and exit Active Directory.

    • 4

Open the shared folder you created in Step 2. Open the desired user name folder to view the ntuser.dat file.

    • 5

Right-click the file and select "Rename." Change .dat to .man.
If you don't see file extensions, go to "Tools -- Folder Options -- View" and uncheck "Hide extensions for known file types." This is located at the top of the explorer window.

Tips & Warnings

  • Ensure the profile is exactly as you wish before changing it to .man. You will need to rename the file to .dat in order to make profile changes.

  • Settings will not take affect until the user logs off and back on.

  • Don't use mandatory profiles for users that need to make frequent changes to programs or user settings. Any settings they make will be erased the moment they log off.
