How to Use IRC on a Proxy

If you are someone who enjoys privacy when using Internet Relay Chat (IRC), one of the things you can use is a proxy server. A proxy server is a server you can connect your IRC program to. The server then basically acts as a middleman, allowing you to connect to any IRC network, but not revealing anything personal about you, such as an IP address.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the IRC program that you use.

    • 2

Go to the connection settings of the program.

    • 3

Choose the option for a Proxy server. This may also be in your "Firewall" settings.

    • 4

Set the protocol to "Proxy" and enter the IP address, password (If needed) and port of the proxy server you want to use. Click OK.

    • 5

Connect to IRC networks as you normally would.

Tips & Warnings

  • Connecting through a proxy server may increase the latency between you and the IRC server.

  • Do not attempt to do anything illegal using the server. You can still be traced by law enforcement agencies if needed.
