Dryer vents can be an inviting home for birds. They like to get away from the outside elements and will build homes in your outside dryer vent. The only way to keep them out and keep the air flow moving is to install a dryer vent cover, which is a one-piece unit that includes the metal pipe that goes through the wall to the dryer hose. Installation will take an hour, a few tools and some caulk to accomplish. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Indoors, pull the dryer away from the wall and disconnect the dryer hose from the outside vent by loosening the clamp with a screwdriver.

    • 2

Go outside and remove the four screws that hold the dryer vent shroud to the house using a Phillips-head screwdriver.

    • 3

The vent shroud may have caulk around the seam. If it does, slip a putty knife in between the shroud and the house to break the seal.

    • 4

Pull the vent shroud away from the house, removing the shroud and solid pipe that goes through the wall.

    • 5

Clean around the vent hole, removing the old caulk by scraping it away with the putty knife.

    • 6

Insert the solid pipe of the vent cover into the wall. Make sure that the vent cover is flush against the house.

    • 7

Using four rust-resistant screws and a Phillips-head screwdriver, attach the dryer vent cover to the house.

    • 8

Apply a bead of outdoor caulk around the seam between the vent cover and the house, using a caulking gun.

    • 9

Go inside the home and reconnect the dryer hose to the new dryer vent. Push the dryer back into its position.
