How to Hire a Live-In Nanny

There are many benefits to hiring a live-in nanny. She can help with infants during the night, see the children off to school, pick them up in the afternoon and be with them on your nights out or when you travel. Some live-in nannies can also help with other needs, from cooking to acting as your personal assistant, but you must be specific about your requirements during the hiring process.

Instructions

    • 1

Make a list of duties you wish your nanny to fulfill. This will help you make a decision on the type of nanny you need. While live-in nannies will only provide care for your children, housekeeper nannies can be expected to also perform some domestic duties.

    • 2

Consider the type of qualification you are comfortable with. You can choose someone with a degree in early childhood education, a nanny who has has worked for other families, or someone who only has experience with baby-sitting or caring for younger siblings.

    • 3

Think about other preferences. You may want someone mature, someone who can teach the children a different language, or someone who is friendly but quiet. You may also prefer a male nanny. Age, gender, culture, and personality are just some of the considerations.

    • 4

Ensure that you can provide your nanny with comfortable living quarters. Your nanny should have a room to which she can retire after hours. You must be able and willing to give her complete privacy when she is not working.

    • 5

Search for a nanny. You can contact an agency or you use your own methods: putting an ad in the local newspapers, advertising at local colleges that have a childhood education department, talking to members of your parenting group and using your network of friends and family.

    • 6

Conduct a background check.Have your nanny provide a list of the people she has worked for and call them. Ask about their experiences with her, their opinions of her character and work ethic, and their overall assessment.

    • 7

Have the nanny meet your children and watch how she interacts with them. If they are old enough to give their opinions, consider their impressions of the nanny when making your final decision on whether to hire her.

    • 8

Negotiate a salary. If you are unsure of what a fair rate would be, talk to people you know who have experience with hiring live-in nannies.

    • 9

Draw up a contract. It should include a schedule of duties, workdays and the rate of pay for regular hours, overtime and any extra work. It should also address rules for overtime, on-call hours, time off and vacation.

    • 10

Consider having a trial period. This gives you time to see the nanny at work and decide if the arrangement is right for her and your family. The trial period may last from a few days to a few weeks. Ensure that this is included in the contract.

Tips & Warnings

  • Make sure your nanny is a legal resident with documents proving that she can work legally.
