How to Register a Vehicle With a Flood Title
When a vehicle sustains flood damage, problems that can not be seen are often present. Rust, wiring damage and even mold may be present. For this reason, some states require flood-damaged vehicles to be re-titled as a salvaged vehicle if they sustain flood damages. This means there are a few additional steps to take if you want to register a flood vehicle. Laws vary by state and may change, so check with your DMV first.

1
Obtain a vehicle inspection by a certified mechanic or as required by state law on the vehicle in question. Once the vehicle passes inspection, go to step two.

2
Apply for a salvage vehicle title if your state requires flood damaged cars to receive a salvage title. If not, simply re-register the car when necessary. Most states require flood-damaged vehicles to have a rebuilt title issued prior to registration. In this case, go to the Department of Motor Vehicles and complete a salvaged or rebuilt car title application. You will need your driver's license or identification, the car Vehicle Identification Number and make, model and year to complete this form.

Acquire the new car title. It will be mailed to you by the DMV. Then go to your local tax office or county DMV to register the vehicle as you would any other car. You must bring with you the car VIN, your driver's license and proof of insurance (if required in your state). In some cases, you may register the car as soon as the new title is created by the DMV. You will not have to wait to receive the actual document.
