How to Make Square Netting

How to Make Square Netting thumbnail
Netting has many uses.

Square netting is a useful component in many crafts and other projects. The netting can be made as fine or as durable as required simply by altering the materials used. Large nets can be used for golf courses and batting cages. Small mesh nets can be used for catching butterflies or minnows. Made of affordable materials and easy to learn, making square nets at home can save significant money over purchasing them at the store.

Instructions

    • 1

Tie the ends of a 6-inch string together to form a loop. This is the foundation loop. Secure the foundation loop in a fixed location by taping it to the work surface.

    • 2

Hold the mesh stick in the left hand, just below the foundation loop. Wrap the string around the front and back of the stick.

    • 3

Pull the string through the back of the loop and pull downward tightly. Hold the string and loop in place at the top of the mesh stick. Form a loop on the left side of the foundation loop. Keep the working string in front of the foundation loop at all times. Pull the string to the right, behind the loop and through the front of the loop that was made on the left. Pull the string down tightly to tighten the knot. This creates a netting knot.

    • 4

Repeat step 3 to create a second loop on the first row.

    • 5

Turn the assembly over so that the working string is on the left. Start netting on the left side of the project.

    • 6

Place the mesh stick below the loop of the above row. Wrap the string around the front and back of the mesh stick, passing through the back of the above loop to the front. Pass the string over the stick again and up through the back of the loop. Hold the string in place and create a netting knot. This extra loop allows the net to be extended when the next row is made.

    • 7

Wrap the string down across the front of the mesh stick and up the back. Pull it through the back of the next loop to the right and create a netting knot.

    • 8

Repeat step 6 to create the end extension loop.

    • 9

Repeat steps 5 through 8 to create additional rows until the net has reached the desired width. Step 7 should be used to create all middle loops.

    • 10

Finish the net by decreasing the row size back to one. This is done by connecting the loops in the above row. Repeat step 7 to create each connecting loop. The final half of the net should be symmetrical to the half already created.

    • 11

Create the final loop by repeating step 7.

Tips & Warnings

  • These instructions create a thin mesh net. For a larger net, use a thicker material such as a rope.

  • The mesh stick is used to maintain a uniform shape in all the loops. Use a ruler, a rectangle of cardboard, a block of wood or any other sturdy material to achieve the same effect if necessary.
