Legally annoying your roommate will not get you in trouble with the law, but it may ruin your relationship with the person who pays half of your rent and utilities. If that does not concern you and you are prepared to deal with any personal consequence, let the annoying begin.

Set an alarm clock to go off in the middle of the day and middle of the night. Make sure the alarm is loud and bothersome, then hide it. Do not put it in your roommate's room, but rather in the general living space. If you are home when it goes off, pretend you do not hear it, but turn it off when your roommate is not looking. If you are not home when it goes off, it will likely annoy your roommate.

Leave your left-over food uncovered and in the refrigerator long after it goes bad. Its deteriorated state and smell will be bothersome, and the fact that your roommate is left to toss it will be annoying. Do not acknowledge that the food is rancid nor fit for consumption, and refuse all requests to get rid of it.

Never wash your dirty dishes. Leave your pots and pans with food residue on the stove with the cooking utensils on the counter. After you finish your breakfast cereal, leave the bowl with any remaining milk, at the table or on the counter. Eat take-out in the living room and leave all containers, cups, utensils and used napkins on the coffee table or floor.

Shiny door knobs are prime for greasing.

Grease the inside door knob to a shared bathroom, your roommate's bedroom or the main entrance door. Use a clear lotion or lubricant to fully coat the door knob. After your roommate shuts the door it will be difficult for him to turn the knob to get out. Of course, this only works on round door knobs.

Generously sprinkle powder on the blades of your roommate's ceiling fan, wiping off any residue on the sides or bottom of the blades. When your roommate turns on the fan, she will be treated to a fine powder shower, as will her entire room and anything in it. The powder will not damage anything, but it will take quite a while for her to clean up.

Tips & Warnings

  • Try not to laugh when your roommate is annoyed. It is more annoying to ignore the situation or act like your roommate is too sensitive.

  • Make sure you can take what you dish out. Your roommate may retaliate.

  • Your roommate may get so annoyed he moves out and leave you with all the bills. Make sure his name is on the lease so he is responsible for his share.
