How to Try Out for Canadian Football Teams
In Canada, the Canadian Football League, or CFL, is the equivalent of the National Football League (NFL) in the U.S. Though the CFL is not as well-funded or popular as its American counterpart, it is an attractive option for football players who want a playing career, but who may not be able to make it into the NFL. The tryout process for the CFL is less formal than the NFL, as there are only a few things one needs to do.

Work with a conditioning coach or trainer to get yourself in shape for tryouts. You will be competing against former NFL players and many players fresh out of college, so you'll want to be at your best.

Decide which CFL teams you'd potentially like to play for. You can find out about each team, including information about its roster, coaches and location, by visiting the CFL's official website (see the "Resources" section below).

Have a family member, friend or sports videographer tape you at a game. If you do not currently play, you can use any recorded footage of you playing in college, semi-professionally or professionally. If high school footage is all you have, it will have to suffice, but you should pick your absolute best film. After you have retrieved your playing footage, visit the CFL's official website and view the links to the teams you are interested in. On each team's "Contact" page, you will find the mailing address, phone and fax numbers and email address of their scouting department, as well as instructions on how to send your video footage.

Contact the individual teams you're interested in playing for and see when their next scouting camps are. The CFL as a league does not hold tryouts, but individual teams have scouting trips throughout the year. These scouting schedules are not made public, so you need to contact the teams and ask. Each team's contact information is located on its official website.

Attend the CFL's evaluation camp, also known as E-Camp. Most of the players that attend E-Camp are Canadian residents or athletes considered to be "non-imports" (Canadian born or trained). E-camp is the CFL's equivalent to the NFL's scouting combine, and happens annually in early March. The CFL's Central Scouting Bureau determines who will be invited to E-Camp each year, and the event is invitation-only.
