Homemade Moisturizing Dog Shampoo

Homemade Moisturizing Dog Shampoo thumbnail
Keep your dog's skin moisturized using a homemade dog shampoo.

Dogs get dry skin just like humans. Moisturizing dog shampoo will help add moisture to the dog's skin, making him itch and scratch less. Commercial dog shampoos are available from most pet supply stores. These products can be expensive and often contain harsh ingredients. Opt for homemade dog shampoo to moisturize your dog's skin. You will save money and use mild ingredients that will add moisture to the animal's skin.

Instructions

  1. Recipe 1

    • 1

Rinse out an empty shampoo bottle. Make sure that there are no traces of the existing shampoo left in the bottle.

    • 2

Fill an empty, clean milk jug with 1 qt. water. Add 1 cup distilled white vinegar, 1/3 cup glycerin and 1 cup soap-based dish soap. Ivory and Joy are examples of soap-based dish soaps. Use a funnel to make transfer easy.

    • 3

Secure the cap on the milk jug. Shake the jug a few times to thoroughly combine the ingredients. Transfer the mixture to the empty shampoo bottle.

    • 4

Store the excess shampoo in the milk jug. Make sure to label the jug so you know what the contents are. Shake the shampoo bottle before each use.

    Recipe 2

    • 5

Fill a bowl with 16 oz. cornstarch. Use a bowl that has a snug-fitting lid.

    • 6

Add ten drops tea tree, lemon, rosemary or lavender essential oil. Pour ½ cup cornmeal into the bowl. Use a spoon to thoroughly combine all of the ingredients.

    • 7

Store the mixture in the bowl with the lid secured tightly. Rub the mixture into your dog after thoroughly wetting down the animal's coat. Let it stand on the dog for five minutes before rinsing it off.

Tips & Warnings

  • Glycerin is a natural moisturizer and can be purchased in the first aid section at most grocery stores, pharmacies and discount stores.

  • Check with your veterinarian before using a homemade moisturizing shampoo. If your dog has any skin issues, the vet may want you to use a certain soap for the dog.
