How to Draw a Baby Rabbit
Budding sketch artists often look to nature for objects to draw. Drawing common animals such as birds and rabbits can be a satisfying place to begin learning some drawing skills. A baby rabbit would make a suitable subject for a pencil drawing. Because baby rabbits are similar to adult rabbits, you can follow many of the same techniques used for drawing an adult rabbit. Alter the baby rabbit's appearance slightly to make it smaller and more rotund and you will have a cute and cuddly baby rabbit drawing.

1
Draw the basic outline of the baby rabbit first as if the baby rabbit is sitting hunched with its legs hiding beneath it and you are looking at the rabbit from the side. Make one large oval on its side for the rabbit's body. Make a smaller circle for the rabbit's head, positioning this head circle so it overlaps onto the oval. Overlap the head circle onto the body oval so only approximately half of the head circle protrudes out from the oval. Position the head so it appears to be a bump on the left upper side edge of the oval.
-
2
Draw one ear coming off from the head circle so the ear appears to be lying back along the top of the oval pointing toward the back (as if the ear is lying on top of the baby rabbit's back). Start the triangle within the upper right side of the circle and make the ear a long and thin triangle shape. Add one or two long lines inside the triangle outline along the length of the triangle to resemble the soft skin folds of the ear.

3
Make one eye for the baby rabbit. Make the eye oval-shaped and position the eye in the approximate center of the circle head. Fill in the eye with a dark, brown color.
-
4
Draw a tiny nose for the baby rabbit at the front lower edge of the head circle (at the front of the rabbit's face). The nose is actually only a slit for a nostril, so make a thick, dark line that starts at the outer edge of the circle and extends in a short distance to create the rabbit's nostril. Angle this nostril up slightly toward the rabbit's eye and stop the nostril when it is approximately half the length of the rabbit's eye. Make the outline of the nostril a dark brown or black color with a colored pencil.
-
5
Erase the lines where the head circle and the body oval overlap so these shapes become one baby rabbit body shape. As the baby rabbit sits hunched in this position, the legs and feet are tucked under the body and are not visible--for this reason you need not add them to the drawing.
-
6
Add the fur to the baby rabbit. Use the colored pencils to draw short, straight lines with tan, gray, black and brown pencils. Use all of the colors together to create a mottled and variegated fur color for the baby rabbit. Add color to the rabbit's ears with the tan or gray colored pencils. Trace over the lines you drew for the skin folds inside the ear with a black or dark brown colored pencil so these lines are visible through the tan or gray fur you add to the ears. Add a heavy outline to the eye, the ear and the nostril to define them clearly.

Tips & Warnings
Baby rabbits do not have the same body shape as adult rabbits. They are more compact and round. Baby rabbit tails are also difficult to discern while the rabbit is sitting in a hunched position.
