How to Latch Hook a Christmas Train Stocking thumbnail
No one likes a boring Christmas stocking.

A Christmas stocking for a train collector will be a nice early, ready-to-hang gift. It may be a challenge to find the perfect pattern of a train that your fan will treasure. You can design and latch hook a Christmas train stocking. Create your own kit with 3.5- or 5-mesh canvas. You can choose the colors of precut yarn that you want to use for the project.

Things You'll Need

  • Graph paper
  • Colored pencils
  • Cardboard
  • Rug canvas

Instructions

    • 1

Draw the shape of your stocking on a piece of graph paper. Use a true-to-size sheet of graph paper for the desired size of your stocking. This will make it easier for you to design the pattern.

    • 2

Make a line drawing of a train on the graph paper stocking shape. You can use a page from a coloring book as a reference. Keep the locomotive and train cars in perspective to one another. Add presents to an empty coal car. Flowers, stuffed toys and animals can be added for your own personal touch.

    • 3

Photocopy your completed drawing. Color in the drawing with colored pencils for a key to go by when creating the stocking.

    • 4

Purchase rug canvas in the mesh size that you want to use. The canvas should be large enough so you can draw the front of the stocking on it as well as add two inches for the hem. Tape the canvas down on a large sheet of cardboard to flatten it. Draw the stocking shape on the canvas. Gently pull the canvas away from the cardboard.

    • 5

Follow your color key from step 3 to choose yarn for your Christmas train stocking. You can buy skeins of yarn and cut your own 3-inch pieces by hand, or you can buy bundles of precut yarn.

    • 6

Use the latch tool while following the color key and your pattern to latch hook the train design and background on to the canvas stocking. Start at the bottom of the stocking and work your way up to the top. Move from left to right on the canvas. When finished, sew the latch hook canvas to a cloth stocking that can be cut from cotton or velvet, using your pattern as a guide.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can lightly paint the color key on to the canvas stocking with acrylic paint if you need a guide.
