How to Register a Web Site thumbnail
Register your website with a domain name.

Registering your website is the difference between someone being able to find your website in search engine results or not finding it. When you register your website this will help to increase your chances of it showing up in the first few pages of search engine results. This increases your chances for more visitors to your website and more sales of your products or services. However, even if all you are offering is information, it is still a good idea to register your website so visitors can find it.

Instructions

    • 1

Select a domain name for your website. This can be your own name, the name of your business, or even a set of keywords that describe the information found on your website. For example: leapoffaithpublishing.com or patriciarichardson.info or buyyourfavoritebooks.com to name a few.

Check to see if the domain name you have chosen is available. You can do this by going to Network Solutions. (Link is in "Resources" section). Type in your domain name and then select the boxes next to the extensions you are interested in. Click on the "Search" button and it will open a window that tells you if that domain name is taken or not. If it is you will have to choose another domain name until you find one that is not.

Register your domain name. You can do this at any number of places online. A couple of possibilities for domain registrars are Go Daddy, and Bravenet. (Links are in "Resources" section). Go to the registrar of your choice type in your domain name where indicated and then click the "Register Domain" button. This will take you to a purchase page where you can use your credit card to purchase your domain name.

Tips & Warnings

  • Choose a domain name based on keywords or terms that people would search for using a search engine.

  • Consider taking advantage of registering a private domain name as this will keep you out of the global Internet database and cut down on spam.

  • If your domain name is longer than three words use hyphens between the words.

  • Register multiple extensions in order to protect the domain name you have chosen.

  • Do not choose a domain name that too long or has a bunch of syllables or it will be too hard to remember.
