Homemade Christmas Food Gift Baskets

Homemade Christmas Food Gift Baskets thumbnail
A Christmas gift basket should look very festive.

Creating a homemade Christmas basket is an inexpensive way to wish someone a Merry Christmas. It also allows you to express your own unique personality, as the decor of the basket will represent your individual artistic taste. You can tailor each basket to the likes and dislikes of the recipient so that each person who receives a gift basket from you feels truly special. Be sure to give yourself plenty of time for preparation of the contents and assembly of each basket. In this way, each basket will be thoughtfully compiled and not hurriedly thrown together.

Instructions

    • 1

Place filler into the basket or container. Use shredded red or green plastic or tissue paper, excelsior, shredded comic books or newspaper. Christmas tree tinsel will provide a more festive effect. Put in enough filler so that it just reaches the top of the container.

    • 2

Bake cookies, bread, brownies, fudge, candy or pies. Items can be specific to Christmas, like fruit cake and Christmas cookies, or they can be tasty treats that are good no matter what time of year it is. The objective is to give the recipient exactly what he likes.

    • 3

Wrap the food in green or red plastic wrap. This will provide the goodies with a festive-looking, airtight package. You can position the items on small plates or trays and wrap plastic wrap around the entire plate or tray, or you can wrap each item individually.

    • 4

Tie a piece of red, green, gold or silver ribbon around each wrapped item in a simple bow. Cut away excess ribbon.

    • 5

Add a store-bought item to the gift basket as a special treat. This could be a bottle of wine or sherry, some fine cheese, expensive coffee or tea, fancy nuts or candies, etc. Tie a festive bow around this item also.

    • 6

Position your wrapped items in the container. Make sure that the heaviest ones go into the container first, anchoring the filler in the container. Add the lighter items last. Organize things in such a way that the heavy items won't crush the lighter ones.

    • 7

Add a Christmas ornament to the basket for a festive touch.

    • 8

Cut a square yard of red or green cellophane basket wrap and lay it on a table. Place the container in the exact middle of the basket wrap and pull the sides of the wrap upwards, so that the basket is covered. The ends of the wrap should be gathered in a bunch at the top.

    • 9

Secure the bunched basket wrap with a piece of ribbon tied in a knot. Cover the knot with a large bow or with several bunches of curled ribbon.

Tips & Warnings

  • Choose a traditional wicker basket, or use a large tin bucket, a wooden crate, a planter or a large wooden bowl, if you'd like a slightly different effect.
