How to Adjust Scope Rings

Rifle scopes are an essential component of any sharpshooter's repertoire. These telescopic sights often are held in place with scope rings, which fasten to the scope and hold it securely against the firearm. While scopes can adjust for more accurate shooting, sometimes the scope rings need to be adjusted, as well. All houses need a strong foundation, and the same holds true for scopes.

Things You'll Need

  • Large work surface
  • Screwdriver or allen wrench, depending on the model

Instructions

    • 1

Place the gun on a solid work surface, such as a dining room table or work bench. Ensure that it is unloaded by removing any rounds and by checking the breach.

    • 2

Unscrew the upper ring assemblies that hold the scope in place with the screwdriver or allen wrench. Most models have four small screws on either side of the scope for each scope ring. Place the screws in the small cup on the table to keep from losing them.

    • 3

Lift the upper ring assemblies away from the scope. Remove the scope from the lower assemblies and set aside.

    • 4

Loosen the screws on the lower scope ring assemblies. Doing so will allow you to adjust your scope rings on the scope rail as desired. Scope rings should be placed as far apart on the rail as possible (depending on the scope) to maintain the widest base. The closer the rings are to each other, the more prone to jostling the scope will be. You may need to reference the scope from time to time to ensure proper placement.

    • 5

Tighten the lower ring assemblies onto the run rail. Do so by tightening the screws in an alternating pattern, with one screw on one side, then another screw on the other, and so on.

    • 6

Rest the scope on the lower ring assemblies. Place the upper ring assemblies over the scope.

    • 7

Tighten the screws as before in an alternating fashion. Take care to not screw too tightly. While the gun rail is pretty solid and can take plenty of force from the screws, the scope is a delicate piece of equipment. Screwing too tightly can warp the metal and render the scope inaccurate.

Tips & Warnings
