Bluetooth is a wireless technology that allows short-range connectivity between devices. One of the most common uses is between a cell phone and a headset, but more computers are coming with Bluetooth compatibility to make communicating with peripherals easier. All you have to do is pair the devices and you are connected without a tangle of wires. If your computer does not have Bluetooth built in, adding it is a simple procedure.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

  1. Preparation

    • 1

Wrap the ESD strap around your wrist and clip the other end to a metal object to prevent static electricity discharges that could damage the computer components.

    • 2

Turn off and unplug the computer.

    • 3

Remove the cover and lay the computer on its side. Depending on the design of the case, this could involve regular screws, thumb screws or a latch system.

    Installation

    • 4

Remove the expansion slot cover from the back of the case. This could either be screwed down or have a latch system, again, depending on the case design.

    • 5

Insert the USB expansion card into the slot. Make sure the card is firmly seated in the slot, then connect the bracket to the case.

    • 6

Insert the USB Bluetooth adapter into a port on the card. If the card has an internal port, you can use it and reserve the external ports for items that may be added later.

    • 7

Put the cover back onto the case, then plug in and turn on the computer.

    Software and Connection

    • 8

Install the Bluetooth driver software. The software may be included in the operating system. If the software for the specific device is not included, then use either the generic software or the software that came with the adapter.

    • 9

      Open the Bluetooth adapter software.

    • 10

Run the software and follow the prompts to pair your devices to the computer. Once the devices are paired, you can use them just like you would if they were connected with wires.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can connect just about any type of Bluetooth device to your computer. You can keep your contacts and schedule synchronized with your phone and use a headset for voice chat or video conferencing. With a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse, your desk will be less cluttered since there will not be wires running across it.
