How to Set up Windows for Faxing
Setting up your Windows operating system to send and receive faxes requires either a modem or a server. Faxing with a modem requires either a built-in or an external fax modem and a phone line. Faxing with a server requires a connection to a fax server on a connected network.

Verify that your computer is connected to an analog phone line.

Determine whether your computer is using a built-in modem or an external modem. To detect a built-in fax modem, click the "Start" button in the lower-left corner of the screen, click "Control Panel" and the "Printers and Faxes" icon. For external modems, follow the manufacturer's instructions and verify that the modem is turned on.

Click "Fax" in the bottom left pane. Fax view appears.

Click "Start," "All Programs" and" Windows Fax and Scan." For first-time connections, choose "New Fax" on the toolbar. Follow the instructions in the Fax Setup Wizard that appears. To switch from a server or modem, click "Tools," "Fax Accounts" and "Add." Follow the rest of the instructions in the Fax Setup Wizard.

Click "Start," "All Programs" and "Windows Fax and Scan."

Choose "Fax" in the bottom of the left pane. Fax view appears.

Click "Fax Accounts" on the "Tools" option at the top of the screen, then "Add." The Fax Setup Wizard appears. Click the option labeled "Connect to a fax server on my network." Follow the instructions on the screen.
