How to Open a .PSD

PSD files (sometimes called PSD templates) are a proprietary file format for Adobe Photoshop, although many contemporary graphic software programs are capable of opening this file format as well. Think of PSD files as readymade design templates for webpages; because they're built in layers, you can easily adjust individual template details like changing colors, adding text or removing layers.

Instructions

      Download and install a program capable of opening PSD files. These include Adobe Photoshop, Jasc Paint Shop Pro 7+ and Ulead PhotoImpact 7+.

      Right-click the PSD file in your desktop and select "Open With..."

      Select the program you installed in Step 1 from the menu that appears. The file should now open. Alternatively, you can either select "Open" from the "File" menu of the program you installed, or just double-click the PSD file (once the appropriate program is installed) to open it automatically.

  • If you're not sure whether your graphic software program can open PSD files or not, you can download a sample PSD file and attempt to open it (see Resources section).
