How to Open DOCX Files on a Thunderbird
Any text files saved in the 2007 edition of the Microsoft Word program automatically default to the "DOCX" extension instead of the older "DOC" extension. If a coworker or friend has sent you an email with a DOCX attachment you can open the file directly from the Mozilla Thunderbird email client. You can modify the settings in the Thunderbird program to automatically open any DOCX attachments with the appropriate program without asking for your permission first.

Tips & Warnings
If you want to automatically save DOCX files you open to a specific folder click the "Tools" button and select "Options." Navigate to the "Attachments" tab. Click "Save All Attachments to this Folder" and then select the folder where the DOCX files should be saved.
If you don't have a version of Microsoft Office that is capable of using DOCX files you will not be able to open the file from Mozilla Firefox. Instead you will need to download and use a DOCX conversion program that will convert the file to an extension your computer is capable of opening.
