If you are the proud owner of cast iron cookware that has become an ugly rust covered sat iron skillet, or maybe it is a cast iron grill pan or maybe it is a cast iron griddle?? Can't tell through all of the rust? The best way to avoid your cast iron cookware from rusting is to use it and use it frequently. Cast iron cookware can rust easily if the seasoning has worn off, it was left wet or it has been sitting unused for a long period of time. Even if you found Grandma's cast iron cookware in the attic and it looks as if you will never be able to use it again, think again. Your cast iron cookware can probably be restored regardless if it has only a little rust or if it is covered in rust. Does this Spark an idea?

      Cut a potato in half. Generously sprinkle salt over the surface of the cast iron cookware. Use the potato to scrub the salt into the cast iron surface to remove the rust.

      Use a fine grit sand paper to sand the rust off of your cast iron cookware. Do not use a rough grit sand paper because you can damage the cast iron cookware surface.

      Use steel wool to scrub the rust out of your cast iron cookware.

      Use a brass wire brush like the type you use for an outdoor grill to scrub the rust out off of your cast iron cookware.

      Take your cast iron cookware to a machine shop and have them grind it down for you.

Tips & Warnings

  • As soon as the rust has been removed from your cast iron cookware, wash, dry thoroughly and most importantly, season it immediately.
