How to Install Vinyl Weatherstripping
Installing vinyl weatherstripping around doors and windows is an effective way of keeping your home warmer during the cold months. Weatherstripping seals air leaks and gaps to prevent warm air and heat from escaping your home and cold air from entering. There are several common types of weatherstripping, including felt, reinforced foam, magnetic, reinforced silicone and vinyl. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, vinyl weatherstripping is slightly more expensive than other types of weatherstripping, such as felt. However, vinyl weatherstripping resists moisture and holds up well. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Inspect doors and windows to find the locations of air leaks and gaps. If you cannot locate gaps by sight, try moving your hand over door and window edges when it's cold or windy outside to detect air movement.
-
2
Use a tape measure to measure the width and length of the surface where you intend to install the weatherstripping, for instance a door jamb or windowsill.
-
-
3
Clean the surface where you are installing the weatherstripping thoroughly with a wet cloth. Make sure the surface is completely clean and dry before proceeding.
-
4
Use scissors to cut the vinyl weatherstrip to size, referring to the measurements you took in Step 2.
-
5
Remove the backing from the weatherstrip adhesive and apply the weatherstrip to the surface. Weatherstrip should be applied all around the top and sides of a door jamb and on the bottom edge of a window where it meets the sill. The weatherstripping will fill gaps once the door or window is closed.
